Malaria Kills Six In One Week Amid Ongoing Cholera

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released its latest Weekly Disease Surveillance Report, showing continued public health concerns across the country, with malaria, dog bites, and cholera cases all being reported.

Malaria remains the most pressing issue, with 4,064 cases and six deaths recorded in the week ending 15 June 2025. The fatalities were reported in Mashonaland Central Province, specifically Mbire District (2), Bindura (1), Guruve (1), and Mazowe (1), as well as Gokwe North (1) in the Midlands Province. Of the total reported malaria cases, 495 involved children under the age of five.

Mashonaland Central recorded the highest number of cases with 2,225, followed by Mashonaland West with 610. The cumulative national malaria tally for 2025 now stands at 116,062 cases and 328 deaths.Meanwhile, two suspected cholera cases were reported this week, both from the UMP District in Mashonaland East Province, with no related deaths. The cumulative figures for cholera this year stand at 543 suspected cases, 83 confirmed cases, 10 suspected deaths, and 13 confirmed deaths.

Dog bite incidents also continue to pose a public health concern, with 466 cases reported during the same period. While no deaths have occurred, the report notes that 99 victims were bitten by vaccinated dogs, 88 by unvaccinated dogs, and 279 by dogs of unknown vaccination status.

Masvingo Province recorded the highest number of dog bite cases at 94, followed by Mashonaland East with 68. Cumulatively, the country has reported 14,422 dog bite cases so far in 2025.
