Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. GOVERNMENT says it is committed to expanding digital infrastructure and bridging connectivity gaps in rural areas where communities are cut off from the outside world.

This is contained in a Zesa Holdings Zvishavane to Tokwe fibre pulling project progress report, which delayed commencement.

“Fibre pulling was due to start on 7 June, but was postponed when both in-house stringing machines failed. Rental procurement has been initiated,” the report read.

“Two additional machines will be hired [US$1 150/set for 4 days] to string 40km; the internal machine will pull the remaining 20km. Camping sites have been identified at Tokwe and Zvishavane substations.”

Acting Powertel managing director, processor, power tool, communications, Willard Nyagwande, said the project sought to improve high-speed fibre optic internet across the region.

“We are installing fibre and existing power lines. What you are seeing is the 11kV power line, which is in Great Zimbabwe University bush clearing because our power lines pass through thick bushes, so there’s a lot of work being done here,” Nyagwande said.

“These guys are clearing the bush so that after clearing, this area will be passable.”

He said the project was expected to be completed next week.

“After clearing the bush, we will then do the hanging of the fibre. This fibre is going to be hung on this electricity pole that you can see, this electricity pole,” he said.

“Fibre has a very high bandwidth because we are going to be having unlimited internet access in this whole area.

“The projects are going to be done in a triangle, so that it is going to be a bandwidth, so that it can cover the whole of Zimbabwe and is expected to finish next week on Tuesday.”
