Nurses accuse govt of neglecting welfare

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. KAROI, Oct 10 (NewsDay Live) – The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) says it is outraged by the government’s continued neglect of nurses, who it said were the backbone of the health system, but are being ‘treated with complete disregard.’

“For too long, civil servants have been forced to survive on salaries that are far below the poverty line, wages that insult the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve this nation with loyalty and compassion,” ZINA president Enock Dongo said in a statement sent to NewsDay Live.

“Nurses have stood firm through every national crisis, working tirelessly in hospitals without adequate resources, often going for months without proper compensation, while the government continues to make false promises. Time and again, officials have pledged to review salaries, but nothing tangible has been done.”

Dongo claimed that the health workers have been earning salaries that can only be described as ‘peanuts.’

“The cost of living keeps rising, the economy worsens, yet the welfare of workers remains ignored,” he said.

“Our cries for justice have fallen on deaf ears. Letters have been written, grievances raised, and warnings issued, all to no avail. The silence from the government is a sign of deep disrespect and total abandonment of the people who keep the health sector alive.”

The association, he said, wanted ‘immediate and meaningful action.’

“The government must stop playing with the lives of its workers. We demand fair, livable salaries that match the current cost of living,” said Dongo.

“Nurses are not asking for luxury, we are asking for dignity, respect, and the ability to feed our families. Enough is enough, the time for talk has ended. It is time for action.”
