Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE leader of People’s Progressive Party of Zimbabwe (PPPZ), Timothy Mapfumo Chiguvare, says President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s time in office is running out despite Zanu PF adopting a resolution to extend his term of office by two years.
Zanu PF adopted the resolution at the party’s National People’s Conference last week and directed Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to initiate a process to implement the resolution.
Ziyambi is also Zanu PF legal secretary.
Chiguvare, however, cited the country’s economic woes as the reason Mnangagwa must step aside.
Chiguvare argued that the pressing social and economic hardships facing Zimbabweans will lead to Mnangagwa’s ouster in the forthcoming presidential elections.
He also dismissed suggestions made by the ruling party for the postponement of 2028 elections as unfeasible.
“The situation in the country will force us to have elections soon. There is no way the people of Zimbabwe can allow elections after 2028,” Chiguvare said.
He attributed the widespread suffering of citizens to government’s failure to manage the economy.
Chiguvare claimed that the nation’s vast mineral wealth can catalyse a rapid turnaround of the economy.
“We know our country is the richest in the world. It has all the minerals that can turn it around in six months,” he said.
He added that PPPZ had a viable plan for economic rejuvenation and was committed to restoring Zimbabwe as the breadbasket of Africa.
PPPZ was founded in 2008 to foster inclusive governance.
Zanu PF director of Information Farai Marapira dismissed Chiguvare’s comments, characterising PPPZ as a “fly-by-night opposition party looking for relevance”.
“The ruling party has consistently empowered citizens through various policies,” Marapira argued.
