Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. BULAWAYO, Nov. 6 (NewsDay Live) – Suspected Zanu PF youths allegedly disrupted a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) press conference that was being addressed by the party’s leader Douglas Mwonzora, in Bulawayo.
MDC spokesperson Lloyd Damba confirmed the developments.
“We were attacked yesterday at our Bulawayo office, soon after members of the press left,” Damba said
“About 20 Zanu-PF youths entered our meeting armed, numbering about 20.
“They were wearing white T-shirts printed with Boys Dzamudhara slogans.”
“A stampede followed, and we were quickly whisked away by our security to a safe place.”
Efforts to get a comment from the police were fruitless as their spokespersons did not answer their phones.
At the press conference, Mwonzora spoke out against plans by Zanu PF to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office to 2030.
Mnangagwa’s term of office constitutionally expires in 2028.
While the President has claimed that he is constitutionalist and will step aside in 2028, Zanu PF adopted a resolution at the ruling party’s conference to implement the 2030 agenda with haste.
“People of Zimbabwe must claim what is in the constitution,” Mwonzora said.
“In the constitution there is a principle called ‘The sovereignty of the people’ which is the power of the people to decide, it is the power of the people of Zimbabwe to decide whether there should be an extension or not, it is them that fought the term limit during the constitution making process.”
He said there was no loophole indicating the Zanu PF-led government may attempt to use the Parliament to extend Mnangagwa’s term of office and avoid a referendum.
