The United Kingdom says it is following closely freelance journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono’s court case.
The UK’s Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State, Dominic Raab asserted that journalists should not be arrested for reporting about corruption. Raab posted on Twitter:
Following journalist Hopewell Chin’ono’s court case in Zimbabwe very closely.
Journalists must be allowed to highlight corruption without fear of arrest and imprisonment.
The UK stands with those who seek to report the truth around the world.
Chin’ono was arrested on July 20 this year on accusations of inciting citizens to revolt against the government during the tense period leading up to the foiled July 31 anti-government protests.
The award-winning journalist had been vocal against systemic corruption and was warned of arrest by senior government and ruling ZANU PF officials.
