Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean football supporters have voiced anger on social media over the performances of Marvelous Nakamba, Divine Lunga, and Washington Arubi following the national team’s 3-2 defeat to South Africa in a decisive AFCON Group B match on Monday night.
The loss confirmed Zimbabwe’s exit from the tournament, leaving the Warriors at the bottom of the group behind Egypt, South Africa, and Angola.
Nakamba, the Luton Town midfielder, was penalised for a handball in the 80th minute, conceding a penalty that allowed South Africa’s Oswin Appollis to score the decisive third goal.
Lunga, the Mamelodi Sundowns defender, was also criticised for a misjudged back-header that enabled Lyle Foster’s second goal, and for openly celebrating with Bafana Bafana players at the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Arubi, who plays for Marumo Gallants, was beaten three times and faced scrutiny for his role in Foster’s second goal, although he made several crucial saves during the game.
Fans argue that Zimbabwe’s exit was largely due to self-inflicted errors and question whether senior players like Nakamba are past their peak.
Some have gone further, blaming player agents and alleged corruption within ZIFA and team management, suggesting selections are influenced more by financial interests than national pride.
Coach Marian Marinica is said to have limited control over the squad, which has reportedly been shaped by agents rather than merit.
Zimbabwe has participated in six AFCON tournaments (2004, 2006, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2025) but has never advanced past the group stage.
Across 18 matches, the Warriors have recorded just three wins, three draws, and 12 losses, showing the team’s long-standing struggles on the continental stage.
