Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Bar Association (OAA) will promote, until Friday this week, a training course on electoral disputes, the vice-president of the institution informed this Monday.
Jair Fernandes, said that the objective is to train associates in matters of electoral disputes for a better response to possible situations of this nature.
He said that the elections are held “by people with a strong interest in winning the case, which can generate conflict of greater or lesser proportion in the country, which is why lawyers are being prepared for this purpose”.
The official clarified that Angola is a country with a history of post-electoral conflict, so he considers it necessary to train justice operators for a better response.
25 lawyers from the 18 provinces of the country participate in the training action.
Luís Jimbo, one of the trainers, said that the trainees will be trained on the legal framework in matters of electoral disputes, electoral rights disputes and conflict resolution, litigation of proceedings before the bodies, the Electoral Court and offenses arising from the electoral process.
Asked about the reality of post-electoral disputes in Angola, he said that it is a recurrent process, since, since 1992, there have been situations in which political parties in opposition have contested the results and, on the other hand, “the posture of some courts who allege the lack of processes in the dimension that is claimed, as well as the lack of clarity, in relation to the bodies where you can complain against electoral infractions, as well as the appearance of accusations among the candidates in the media”.
Luís Jimbo said that what promotes integrity, justice and free elections are the institutions of law that intervene in the process to ensure that electoral justice is effective.
