Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 20 women, assigned to the Civil Protection and Fire Department, reinforced, yesterday, in Luanda, the Human Milk Bank (BLH), with a donation action, within the framework of Breastfeeding Week.

The act, held at the HMB, at the Lucrécia Paim Maternity Hospital, in Luanda, also featured an exhibition of photos of beneficiary mothers and babies.

The coordinator of the HMB, Elisa Gaspar, said that the bank has already assisted one thousand and forty two women, having benefited a total of one thousand and forty-five babies.

The Human Milk Bank, from the Lucrécia Paim Maternity Hospital, started to count on the collaboration of women firefighters, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when there was a reduction in the number of donors.

“Every time we carry out this process, there is a previous training work on the procedures for harvesting, storing and preserving human milk”, he said, adding that, in the past, some members of the corporation received special training on breastfeeding in Brazil.

The selection of donors, he explained, can begin in prenatal care, when pregnant women come to the Lucrécia Paim Maternity Hospital. “Usually analyzes are carried out to see if the donated milk is safe. The HMB does not receive donations from mothers with infectious diseases, drug users or undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or even malnutrition”, he said, in addition to explaining that every woman can go to the Maternity Hospital and receive guidance on being a donor.
