Minister inaugurates meteorology and geophysics services in Huíla today

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, will inaugurate this Friday, 18th, at Mukanka airport, in the city of Lubango, the automated station for measuring meteorological parameters at altitude (ROBOTSONDA).

The referred inauguration also includes the verification of the aeronautical station of the same airport, as well as the synoptic and seismic station in the town of Mapunda, both in the province of Huíla, within the scope of the Modernization Project of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET ), in partnership with Meteo France Internacional (MFI).

“As has been seen, with the growing technological evolution, services related to meteorology in the country have been witnessing a radical transformation in the areas of Weather Forecast, Climatology, Hydrometeorology, Agrometeorology, Seismology and Aeronautics, with the inclusion of Stations, Hardware, Software and training in the most different areas of the sector”, says a press release that JA Online had access to today.

Thus, the note clarifies, the entry into operation of ROBOTSONDA, at Mukanka airport, equipment with cutting-edge technology, will allow realistic modeling of atmospheric conditions at altitude, temperature variables, wind direction and speed, humidity and pressure ( up to 35 km), through fully automated sounding balloon launching systems.

It is important to highlight that in relation to the African continent, with the exception of Angola, all other countries operate this task in a conventional way. “As a rule, the data generated by the soundings (ROBOTSANDA) are intended to feed the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) network and allow Angola to contribute on a large scale to the correction of global meteorological models”.

According to the document, these data are also assimilated by the INAMET regional meteorological models and improve the relevance of these models, which will mainly benefit the Angolan population, through more accurate meteorological forecasts and better warnings in case of severe meteorological events (for example, extreme rainfall and dry).

“The equipment to be inaugurated at the Mukanka airport, completes a network that totals three ROBOTSONDAS in Angola, one of which is already operational at the 4 de Fevereiro airport in the province of Luanda and the other installed at the Comandante Dangereux airport in Luena, scheduled to be inaugurated in end of November of the current year”, reads the statement.
