President João Lourenço reaffirms commitment to world peace and security

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, reaffirmed this Thursday, in Luanda, the commitment of the Angolan Executive with national development and world peace and security.

Speaking at the New Year greetings ceremony to the diplomatic corps, João Lourenço said that Angola has been implementing reforms in recent years, with a view to guaranteeing citizens’ fundamental freedoms, reducing bureaucracy in the civil service and combating corruption and impunity. .

He added that the reform also aims at diversifying the economy, promoting the domestic production of goods and services, reducing imports of essential consumer goods and increasing exports and the supply of jobs.

The holder of the Executive Branch praised the creation of a new business environment and the successful cooperation with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which increased Angola’s credibility with international creditors.

He declared that the noted success was due to the clarification of the role of the State in the economy, the valuation of the private sector, the privatization of State assets and investments in infrastructure for the production and distribution of energy and water, roads, railways , ports and airports.

It also valued the attention dedicated to the social sector, with the construction of important hospital, education and higher education networks, as well as the admission of thousands of professionals in these sectors.

He also pointed out actions to combat drought in the south of the country and poverty, the promotion of entrepreneurship, professional training for young people and the free distribution of professional kits.

Diplomacy

The President declared that Angolan diplomacy, along with other international actors, has been playing an important role in mediating and resolving conflicts through dialogue in the Great Lakes region, in Central Africa and in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

He referred that, mandated by the African Union, Angola, with the participation of the Community of West African States, is making efforts to pacify the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He added that the Angolan mediation also aims to re-establish friendship and good neighborly relations between the DRC and Rwanda.

João Lourenço stressed that within the framework of SADC, Angola contributes to the projection of forces and means in the collective efforts to fight terrorism and pacify Cabo Delgado, in Mozambique.

He welcomed the efforts of the West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional normality, wounded in some African States, such as Mali, Guinea and Bukina Faso.

Coup attempt in Brazil

As pro tempore (acting) president of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), João Lourenço condemned the attack on the institutions of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers in Brazil, which took place last Sunday.

He considered the act an attempt to reverse the constitutional order and the legitimacy of power democratically conferred at the ballot box in Brazil.

For the Angolan statesman, “in those hours on Sunday, Brazilian democracy experienced moments of great danger and uncertainty due to the fact that events could have evolved into a coup d’état”,

US/Africa Summit

President João Lourenço considered the United States of America/Africa summit a victory for the African continent, given the guarantees of being represented in the G-20 and being able to gain a permanent member seat on the UN Security Council.

Such achievements, he added, are the recognition of how much Africa has contributed to the growth and development of the economies of the great powers and how much it can still give to the world economy, to science, culture, sport and world peace and security.

He believes that African representation on the Security Council will be fair and the body would better reflect the geopolitical, economic and demographic reality of the 21st century.

Ceasefire in Ukraine

President João Lourenço urged the establishment of a definitive and unconditional ceasefire by Russia in the war against Ukraine.

He stated that the cessation of hostilities would help create the necessary negotiating environment between the parties involved, which would lead to the construction of a solid and lasting peace on the European continent.

For the Angolan statesman, today’s reality contrasts with the status and prestige gained by Russia for having, with its allies USA, United Kingdom and France, freed Europe and the world from the Nazi threat.

For President João Lourenço, the war against Ukraine represents a serious threat to peace and global security, causing the biggest energy crisis after World War II, which ended in 1945.
