Africa-Press – Angola. The director-general of the National Blood Institute, Deodete Machado, admitted this Friday that the country needs at least 300,000 voluntary donors per year, to meet the daily shortage of blood in hospitals.

Deodete Machado, who was speaking during a blood donation campaign carried out by Radio Nacional de Angola (RNA) workers, said that the country is still far below this number, currently having around 19,000 people engaged in donating this liquid.

Angola, he added, needs to have one percent of donors, but it is still far from this number recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the official, only the country’s capital, Luanda, needs 300 bags a day to respond to demand, noting that the problem of lack of blood is constant, requiring a stock to meet all requests.

He highlighted the fact that harvests had improved considerably, without, however, achieving sustainable storage.

At the moment, he explained, the units have a great deal of consumption, as they are starting to work with special and differentiated procedures, as blood is currently one of the fundamental elements of patient care and care.

After praising, he made it known that the blood donated yesterday by the 30 RNA workers will be prioritized for oncology and pediatric hospitals, due to the characteristics of these patients.

For Elizabeth Smith, an employee at the radio station, this is a simple act of social responsibility that saves lives, which is why she asked everyone to be sensitive to this gesture.
