Africa-Press – Angola. The specialist in mineral resources Yolanda Kata manifested, this Thursday, in favor of a better use of critical minerals, as they represent a business opportunity for national and foreign investors.
Among the critical minerals, Yolanda Kata highlights copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements, riches that can be exploited just like crude oil.
With these minerals, Angola can, in the opinion of the geologist, attract and mobilize national and foreign private investment, thus contributing to the dynamism of the ongoing diversification of the economy in the country and the creation of more jobs.
The specialist was speaking during the 10th International Conference of the African Association of Women in Geosciences, taking place in Luanda since last Wednesday.
Looking at the international discussions around the “Energy Transition”, he believes it to be an opportunity to invest in the promotion and development of mineral projects, which allow meeting future demands, that is, demand.
“It is crucial that Angola, in particular, and the African continent, in general, make significant efforts to radically transform their mining project portfolios, in order to take full advantage of the business opportunities that critical minerals and the energy transition offer”, pointed out the geologist.
He referred that the country has significant deposits of critical minerals and, currently, 36 of the 51 minerals considered the most critical worldwide are known in Angola.
According to the geologist, in recent times, there has already been some effort and special attention focused on minerals such as lithium, iron ore, nickel, lead, cobalt, copper, manganese and rare earth elements, as well as their value chain, such as in the field of technologies.
There are occurrences in the South and North
The national territory has strong occurrences of minerals considered critical, such as chromium, cobalt, copper, graphite and iron ore, and a deeper study is opportune to respond to the coming times.
In addition to those minerals, the specialist lists lead, lithium, manganese, eneodymium, praseodymium, nickel and silver, with strong possibilities of occurrences both in the southern provinces and in those located in the north of the national territory.
For its sustainable use, Yolanda Kata defends the adjustment of mining development strategies to meet the specificities and characteristics of mining, with emphasis on critical minerals.
The 10th International Conference of the African Association of Women in Geosciences takes place under the theme “Earth sciences and sustainable development in Africa – perspectives and challenges”.
Lasting four days, the event brings together specialists from several African countries, with emphasis on SADC.
