Africa-Press – Angola. The National Senior Women’s Basketball Team has eight athletes debuting in the African Championship, which started this Friday (28) in Kigali (Rwanda).

These are Isabel Fernando, Cácia Nzomba, Sara Caetano, Isabel João, Nelma Cunha, Arminda Joaquim, Jessica Malagi and Joana António.

Completing the group called up by Spaniard José Freixa are the experienced Nadir Manuel, Cristina Matiquite, Artemis Afonso and Edvânia Pascoal.

In the group of twelve players, only Nadir Manuel was in the two victories with coach Anibal Moreira, namely in Bamako`2011 and Maputo`2013, in addition to Cristina Matiquite, present in the 2011 edition.

In this endeavor, where it is intended to at least do better than the 8th position achieved in the previous edition, held in 2021, in Cameroon, the national team is deprived of the influential Italee Lucas, Rosa Gala and Avelina Peso.

Compared to the last event, Angola will evolve with a group of athletes six years younger (average 24 years old) and two centimeters taller.

Also making his debut in an African championship is the Spanish coach, José Freixas, hired this year by the Angolan Basketball Federation.

Angola is in group A and starts the competition on Saturday against Côte d`Ivoire.

The competition is made up of four groups of three teams each, with the first team qualifying directly for the quarter-finals.

The second and third play another round of access to the quarter-finals.
