FENACOOPA reaffirms its commitment to the process of diversifying the economy

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the National Federation of Livestock Cooperatives of Angola (FENACOOPA), Salvador Rodrigues, reaffirmed, in Cunene province, the commitment of livestock farmers in the southern region to the process of diversifying the national economy.

Speaking Tuesday, on the importance of cattle and goats, he said that the southern region has sufficient livestock potential to guarantee more than 60 percent of the supply of meat and its derivatives in the country.

He stressed that it was fundamental to create support infrastructures such as slaughterhouses, a cold system and trucks for transport, in order to create a functional logistical system, which would allow transforming this potential into animal protein and make it easier for the product to reach the consumer’s table at the affordable price.

According to the official, it is necessary to replace the old cattle available from traditional breeders, who have been selling their animals little by little.

Salvador Rodrigues said that the federation is developing a project in which ranchers have passed on quality bulls to traditional breeders to gradually improve their specials.

“Currently, there is a certain number of animals with high performance in rural communities, resulting from this project, which is being sold in different markets”, he stressed.

Within the National Plan for the Promotion and Development of Livestock (Planapecuária), he highlighted the existence of the program for the genetic improvement of species, which involves replacing the old herd with small cattle, with the aim of obtaining quality cattle.

To this end, it justifies the need to operationalize the Planapecuária so that it has sustainability in rural areas.

Planapecuária was approved by Presidential Decree No. 13/23 of January 6, and is part of the government’s policy and strategy package to promote and develop the production of beef, pork, goat, sheep and poultry, milk and eggs.

With the implementation of the plan, the Angolan Government expects an increase in beef production from 62.1 thousand tons to 109.4 thousand tons and pork will increase from 9 thousand to 123.4 thousand tons, goat/sheep will grow from 157, 1 for 310.1 tons.
