Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan deputy Djamila de Almeida is part of the group of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) that visited, on Friday, the refugee camp of Nakivale, southern Uganda, close to the border with Tanzania.
Members of the CIRGL Parliamentary Forum, during the visit, noted the conditions in which at least 178,000 refugees are found, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), after having held a meeting with officials of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), responsible for managing the refugee camp.
The Nakivale refugee camp was created in 1958 and is the 8th largest refugee camp in the world, housing mainly refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Eritrea.
In addition to this verification visit to the Nakivale refugee camp, Deputy Djamila de Almeida performs the functions of Rapporteur of the Committee on Gender, Childhood and Vulnerable Persons at the CIRGL Parliamentary Forum.
The parliamentarian is in Uganda to participate, in Kampala, on the 7th and 8th of August 2023, in the 7th Joint Statutory Meeting of the Commission on Gender, Children and Vulnerable Persons, and the Commission on Humanitarian and Social Issues, which will be dominated by two main themes, namely, Child Marriage in the Great Lakes Region, and the Challenges of Refugees and Displaced Persons.
