Africa-Press – Angola. A Joint Declaration for the improvement of the investment environment and economic relations between Angola and Japan was initialed, this Wednesday, in Luanda, between the Minister of Economy and Planning, Mário Caetano João, and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Japan Industry, Nishimura Yasutoshi.
The document also serves to reinforce the commitment between the two countries and emphasize that they have had relations since 1988.
Speaking at the event, minister Mário Caetano João emphasized the signing of the Agreement for the Liberalization, Promotion and Protection of Investment, also carried out which will be one of the instruments of capital importance in economic cooperation and promotion of investments between the two Governments.
He highlighted the historical ties that unite the Republic of Angola and the Empire of Japan, which, according to the official, constitute the foundations on which bilateral cooperation of excellence between the two Governments has been built.
He highlighted that, over decades and years of joint trajectory, the two States developed a unique work with the achievement of remarkable results in public aid for development, in which the Government of Japan has been an important donor in cooperation programs for development , through North-South cooperation mechanisms and the sharing of good practices among peers.
“Based on the achievements achieved together, as well as on the commitment and determination to strengthen political and economic relations, it is now important to deepen the dialogue on public policies, in areas that have a common denominator”, said Mário Caetano João.
The Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Nishimura Yasutoshi, highlighted the economic potential of Angola, which can seek the experience of Japan, which has high technological capacity with an older population.
“They have great potential for cooperation. The private sector has contributed to the technological development of Angola”, she underlined.
Nishimura Yasutoshi hopes the protection agreement will take effect as soon as possible.
He explained that the Japanese delegation includes more than 20 companies that hope to cooperate with Angola, in the production of chemical fertilizers, building public health systems, among others, with exclusive technological capacity.
“African countries, including Angola, face a number of challenges. We believe there are great business opportunities. All companies are betting on the potential ”, she reinforced.
Available data indicate that, between 2020 and 2022, Angolan exports to Japan amounted to US$108 million and imports to US$489 million, with a trade balance of US$380 million unfavorable to Angola.
At the center of these commercial transactions, on the part of Angola, are exports of crude oil, propane and butane gas, and imports consisting of vehicles, auto parts, transport materials, machinery, equipment, plastics, rubber, iron and steel.
Cooperation between Angola and Japan began in 1988 as Emergency Aid, via UNICEF, where later, Japan began to provide assistance in the areas of mine clearance, social reintegration of former soldiers and reintegration of refugees.
