Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, this Thursday encouraged provincial governments and municipal administrations to boost local development, with a view to attracting more private investment.

Speaking at the opening of the 4th edition of the Angolan Municipalities and Cities Fair and the 9th of the Angolan Municipalities and Cities National Forum, João Lourenço underlined the importance of these state administration bodies playing a “crucial role” in reducing existing asymmetries .

“Provincial governments and administrations must promote development in accordance with the local reality and enhance competitiveness factors in their territory”, expressed the Angolan Head of State.

He considered it important to increase attention to improving the quality of health and education services and enhancing human resources, with a focus on increasing productivity.

As for the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM), the President of the Republic said that it is “a success story and a good example that we can rely on the capacity of municipalities to carry out infrastructure works with local companies”.

Within the framework of the fundamental tasks of the State, he highlighted the attention given by the Executive to the implementation of infrastructure projects and provision of essential services in areas such as health, education, water supply/electricity, housing, transport and logistics.

He noted that the referred areas are as necessary for the promotion of the well-being of the population as for the development of the economic activity of the entrepreneurs.

The statesman recalled that the program to combat drought in the south of the country is underway and underlined the construction of the Cafu canal, in Cunene province, which allows capturing and transferring water from the Cunene River to various villages.

Along a course of around 165 kilometers in length, the Canal de Cafu is expected to serve 235,000 inhabitants, ensure the watering of 250,000 head of cattle and the irrigation of 16,000 hectares of land.
