Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, confirmed, this Friday, the construction works of the new General Hospital of Ondjiva, in Cunene, which register a physical execution in the order of 84.7 percent (84.7%) .
Defined for 220 inpatient beds, the work, valued at 52 million euros, including equipping, is under construction in an area of 60 thousand square meters, since May 2021, and is expected to start operating in the first quarter of 2024.
On the occasion, the general coordinator of the supervision of the contract, Cundissa Neto, explained that there are few works left to complete some parts of the physical structure.
He said that the work is progressing satisfactorily and everything is being done to ensure that it is completed within the agreed deadlines.
In turn, in statements to the press, the Secretary of State for the Hospital Area, Leonardo Inocêncio, said that the work is progressing without constraints, looking at the degree of physical execution of 84.7% and financial execution of 74.17%.
He explained that in terms of financing everything is assured, which is allowing the normal course of finishing the physical structure and the assembly of the various devices.
He recalled that seven containers with equipment for the equipping phase of the hospital unit are already on their way to the country.
“We are facing a third-level hospital with all the features, which is the biggest gain for the population of Cunene, who will no longer travel to neighboring Namibia in search of medical treatment”, he said.
He informed that work is under way to hire human resources with qualified capacity to provide a more humane and quality service, within the scope of cooperation with Namibia.
The hospital will have four inpatient units, an equal number of operating rooms, a blood bank, psychiatric hospitalization and eight residences for doctors.
The new health unit will provide various services such as paediatrics, obstetrics, endoscopy, biology, ophthalmology, stomatology, urgency, minor surgery, X-ray, CT scan and psychiatry.
The establishment will replace the old General Hospital, affected, in October 2020, by a fire that completely damaged the surgery area and the oxygen storage station.
Since the fire, the services of the Ondjiva General Hospital have been transferred to the Cuanhama Municipal Hospital, with capacity for 70 beds, located in the Ekuma neighborhood, on the outskirts of Ondjiva.
The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, continued his visit to the municipality of Cuvelai, where he learned about the works on the Ndúe and Calucuve dams, under construction as part of the structuring projects to combat drought.
