Africa-Press – Angola. At least one fisherman died and four others were injured as a result of the calemas that hit the seafront of the city of Porto Amboim, Cuanza Sul province, local authorities reported this Friday.

According to the deputy municipal administrator for the technical sector and community services of Porto Amboim, Úsera Eusébio, the incident took place when, separately, an artisanal vessel was hit by calemas causing the death of a 68-year-old individual.

In another vessel, the source informed, four citizens were going to the coast to unload fish, the vessel hit by big waves, causing serious injuries to the fishermen.

Sources from the Civil Protection Services and local Firefighters reported that the elderly man’s body is still missing, while the four injured are receiving assistance at the Municipal Hospital of Porto Amboim.

Úsera Eusébio made it known that the definitive work to minimize calemas will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport, without specifying the start date of the work.

Several hotel and similar infrastructures, in the coastal area “Alfredo Pukuta”, residences and fish drying areas were hit by calemas.

Asked about what technically can be done to contain the calemas, the civil engineer, Leandro Artur, defended the need to carry out studies on the behavior of the sea in the area.

“Breakwater is the solution, but it is not enough to place the spurs because the beach is also touristic and is close to some dwellings, hence the need to carry out in-depth studies”, he said.

Calemas in Porto Amboim occur between August, September and November, according to the source, the advisable thing would be to make concrete blocks and lay screeds on top, instead of placing stones.

“Do not proceed with laying stones, carry out studies with a definitive project to avoid financial investment without resolving the matter”, he warned.

Work done

In 2018, the Board of Hidroportos erected eight spurs to protect the infrastructure against calemas with a budget of more than Kz one million.

On that occasion, the calemas displaced 42 families and 20 meters of spurs were destroyed and the sea settled about 40 meters from national road number 100.
