Africa-Press – Angola. The Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, in New York, Francisco da Cruz, held a courtesy meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, having analyzed the existing cooperation.
During the meeting, the two entities took advantage of the occasion to address the possibility of inserting Angolan staff in the Global Communications Department.
In a note, the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations refers that during the dialogue Francisco José da Cruz spoke about Angola’s priorities at the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.
The ambassador reaffirmed, on the occasion, Angola’s commitment to hosting the United Nations Information Centre, in Luanda.
From the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, he obtained guarantees of institutional support for the realization of this desideratum.
The Centre, whose Headquarters Agreement was recently signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola, Téte António, and by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, is designed to meet the needs of Portuguese-speaking African
Countries (
PALOP).
The United Nations General Assembly approved the installation of the Luanda Information Center, through resolution “A_Re_64/243”.
The United Nations Information Centers (UNICS), field offices of the Department of Global Communications, are the main sources of
information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are
located.
They are responsible for promoting greater public understanding and support for the purposes and activities of the United Nations.
