Africa-Press – Angola. Angola may host the next edition of the African Basketball League (BALL), said this Thursday, in Luanda, the president of the organizing institution, Amadou Fall.

The intention was expressed by the director of the continental body after a meeting in the capital with the Minister of State for the Social Area, Dalva Ringote.

Speaking to the press, Amadou Fall justified that the intention arises in the wake of the Angolan history, whose selection of the modality is African champion 11 times.

According to the North American League delegate, the local government opened doors to host the event as a way to continue inspiring new generations.

He referred that the idea of the organization goes back to the dispute of the first edition of the continental competition in the League model, in 2021.

Despite the usual candidates for the BALL stage, namely, Kigali (Rwanda), Dakar (Senegal) and Cairo (Egypt), he said that Angola, leader of the continental ranking for over 20 years, is the priority.

He admitted the possibility of the host country of the competition competing with two teams instead of one as until then, fundamentally those with tradition in basketball.

He recalled, however, that, for now, the model regarding the number of participants will continue to be one representative for each nation, preferably the national champions in the respective championships, involving in the end 12 teams.

Angola participated in the last three events with a single representative, Petro de Luanda, having ranked third, in 2021, second, in 2022, and fourth, this year (2023).

Egypt’s Al Ahly are the defending champions.
