Africa-Press – Angola. The Pilot Census, which took place from 19 July to 5 September 2023, in 14 municipalities in seven of the country’s 18 provinces, allowed the registration of around 35 thousand 549 households in 309 buildings, announced the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
In a note, sent this Saturday, INE indicates that the respective data were collected in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Bié, Lunda Norte, Cuando Cubango, Uíge and Cunene, an intervention carried out in 410 census sections, which correspond to the same number of field agents.
Among several challenges, the document states, during the Pilot Census it was possible to test, fundamentally, the difficulties related to the interpretation of collection instruments (questionnaire), tablet handling, resistance of materials and equipment, movement of technicians in difficult-to-access areas and intervention of local and traditional authorities in raising awareness among the population.
According to INE, cartographic updating is currently taking place throughout the country, an operation that will allow us to have a more up-to-date picture of Angola’s geography and, consequently, define the areas to be selected for the main collection.
Therefore, the National Statistics Institute calls for the population’s participation and collaboration in this endeavor.
The Pilot Census is an activity that aims to test the level of organization, methodologies, procedures and, above all, the possible constraints of the operation, to correct and take precautionary measures, serving as a precursor to the General Census/2024.
Meanwhile, next year’s General Population and Housing Census will be the third in the country’s history, the first being carried out in 1970, five years before Angola’s independence, while the second took place in 2014.
This process aims to understand the population structure for all administrative units in the country, strengthening the national technical and material capacity to conduct future data collection.
Providing a database for planning, management and decision-making, and building a sampling base for the selection of survey samples, among households, are also part of the objectives.
Furthermore, the Population and Housing Census is the carrying out of two censuses simultaneously: population and housing, which allows obtaining reliable and updated statistical information, necessary for monitoring and evaluating the strategy to combat poverty.
