Africa-Press – Angola. The MPLA in the province of Huambo proceeded Sunday, to the opening of the commemorative journey on the 17th of September, National Hero’s Day, in allusion to the 101st birthday of the founder of the Nation, António Agostinho Neto.
The opening act of the day commemorating the event, held in the open field of the Calomanda neighbourhood, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo, was chaired by the 2nd secretary of the MPLA in the province of Huambo, Adérito Chimuco.
On the occasion, he appealed to activists and society in general to continue studying the legacy of António Agostinho Neto, as founder of the Nation and First President of Angola.
According to the supporter, Agostinho Neto’s legacy must be properly studied, both by activists and by citizens from all fringes of society, as it contains, among other values, the guiding lines of true patriotism, so that every Angolan can fulfill, properly fulfill their responsibilities and contribute to the country’s development process.
To this end, Adérito Chimuco said that the MPLA planned, within the framework of the commemorative days of National Hero’s Day, several activities, from sporting, cultural, lectures, debates, in order to transmit the legacy of Agostinho Neto to the citizens of the province of Huambo and, above all, to the new generation, so that they know about the achievements and teachings of the proclaimer of National Independence.
The opening act of the commemorative day on the 17th of September was marked with the holding of a football match, between the JMPLA Provincial Secretariat and the Velhas Guardas da Calomanda.
The victory “smiled” for the Old Guards of Calomanda, who won 3-2, by turning the score around in the last minutes, by scoring a penalty.
António Agostinho Neto was born in Icolo e Bengo on September 17, 1922 and died in Moscow on September 10, 1979.
He was an Angolan doctor, writer and politician. In 1975 he proclaimed National Independence and became the first President of Angola until 1979.
