USA: PR arrives in New York for UNGA General Debate

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, arrived in the early afternoon of this Saturday in New York, United States of America (USA), to participate in the General Debate of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly ( UN).

The Angolan Head of State, coming from Havana (Cuba) where he participated in the G 77+China Summit, leads a senior delegation from the country that will take part, from the 18th to the 20th of this month, in debates on different current global issues, such as the terrorism and sustainable development.

The annual debate of the United Nations, at its headquarters in New York, brings together the 193 UN member countries and will run until the 26th of this month.

President João Lourenço is expected to speak on Wednesday, 20th, the second day of the General Debate.

The Head of State’s agenda includes a long list of political and diplomatic contacts, which includes meetings with counterparts and Heads of Government from different countries.

This year, the General Debate takes place under the theme “Rebuilding Trust and Renewing Global Solidarity through Actions to Accelerate the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda to Achieve Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for All “.

The event will be chaired by Ambassador Dennis Francis, of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, elected to the rotating presidency of the United Nations General Assembly on 1 June 2023, representing the Group of States of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC).

The event takes place at a time when the international political-military, economic, social and climatic situation is marked by various challenges and crises in different parts of the world, particularly in Europe and the African Continent.

One of these challenges, which could be on the agenda of the Heads of State and Government present in New York, is the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has had a significant impact on the international situation.

This conflict, which has been going on for more than a year and a half, has greatly affected diplomatic relations, international and regional security and even the global economy.

This is a problem that is having significant humanitarian consequences, with thousands of deaths and an increasing number of refugees and internally displaced people, in addition to seriously affecting the global food distribution chain, especially cereals.

However, the General Debate also takes place in a context in which persistent conflicts are observed in other parts of the world, such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR), Libya, Mali, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Added to these problems are the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, the situation in Western Sahara, the expansion of terrorist actions in the Sahel Region, Somalia and Mozambique, among other situations that will deserve the attention of participants during the working days.

Parallel to the General Debate, several high-level meetings will be held, such as those on financing for development, universal health coverage, the fight against tuberculosis, among others.

It should be noted that other entities from the Angolan State are already in New York, who will join the Head of State, João Lourenço, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
