Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, received, this Wednesday, at the Presidential Palace, in Luanda, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, Lloyd James Austin, with whom he discussed the strengthening of cooperation relations in the field defense and security.
In brief words to the press, upon leaving the meeting, Lloyd Austin said that he presented to President João Lourenço the new angles of US policy towards Africa, highlighting his country’s intention to strengthen partnerships for the promotion of peace, security and governance, based in the rule of law.
In Angola since Tuesday, for a 24-hour visit, as part of a tour of Africa, which has already taken him to Djibouti and Kenya, the North American official also held a courtesy meeting with officials from the Ministry of National Defense , Former Combatants and Veterans of the Country.
This is the first visit by a US Secretary of Defense to Angola.
Lloyd Austin is scheduled to give a speech in the auditorium of the National Historical Archives, on the new angles of US policy towards Africa, under the motto “The power of partnership”.
Lloyd James Austin was sworn in as the 28th Secretary of Defense on January 22, 2021, is President Joe Biden’s principal assistant on all matters related to the Department and sits on the National Security Council.
Born in Mobile, Alabama, and raised in Thomasville, Georgia, he graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science and a commission in the Infantry.
