Africa-Press – Angola. Aspects linked to the importance of the heroic action of the martyrs of Baixa de Cassanje, on January 4, 1961, for achieving national independence were highlighted, this Thursday, in Saurimo (Lunda Sul), by the local leader of the former combatants and veterans of the country.

According to António Upite, who was speaking on the occasion of January 4th, a day dedicated to the martyrs of colonial repression, this date constitutes one of the greatest milestones in history, which resulted in the achievement of independence and effective peace in the country.

He said that freedom was the result of the bravery of nationalists who, tired of humiliation, spared no effort during the process of anti-colonial struggle throughout the national territory.

He appealed to young people to follow the legacy, preserve the achievements and contribute to the reconstruction of the country.

The anniversary, which today marks 63 years, was marked in the province, among other activities, with the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, by governor Daniel Neto.

The event was attended by delegations from the Ministries of Defense and Interior, members of civil society, traditional and ecclesiastical entities.

On January 4, 1961, thousands of Angolan peasants were killed by the Portuguese colonial regime for protesting against low cotton prices, practiced by the Companhia Geral de Algodão “Cotonang”, and the mistreatment imposed by the oppressor.
