Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan National Fuel Society (Sonangol) will have a team of professional chess players in the short or medium term, as part of its social responsibility, announced the president of the Institution’s Board of Directors, Sebastião Martins.

In Luanda, on the sidelines of the recently concluded “science game” tournament, alluding to the company’s 48 years, Sebastião Martins stated that the objective is to respond to the needs of young people, so that, even in the future, they can become employees.

For him, Sonangol has young workers (and beyond) who can work and at the same time engage in this sport, allowing the promotion of the sport and intellectual evolution.

“The objective is to have more African champions for the country in the individual sport. Therefore, I reiterate that chess will be part of the modalities to benefit from aid so that the sport grows and that Sonangol can also benefit from the gains.

“I know that it is very difficult for many young people to have the opportunity to embrace and continue practicing the sport, I am not in Angola, as I am outside the country”, he acknowledged.

Afterwards, the official said that, from now on, the Angolan Chess Federation will be part of the range of modalities sponsored by Sonangol.

Regarding the event as part of the company’s anniversary, to be celebrated on the 25th, he said that it already represents Sonangol’s contribution to the development of the sport and sport in general.

The unified competition, which included the participation of 20 professional players and 32 Sonangol workers, was played in the Swiss system, over nine rounds.

The international master (IM) David Silva won this 3rd edition of the Sonangol Rapid Cup, seconded by the candidate for Master (CM), Cambando José. Third place went to the Specialist (E), Jaime Sonhy.
