Africa-Press – Angola. A delegation from the National Assembly (AN), led by deputy Pedro Sebastião, participates, in Windhoek (Namibia), in the funeral of the late President of that country, Hage Geingob.

Speaking to the press, deputy Pedro Sebastião lamented the death of the African statesman, highlighting the “fervent” and determined way in which he defended the transformation of the Parliamentary Forum into a SADC Regional Parliament.

The President of the FP-SADC National Monitoring Group for Parliaments highlighted the ties of friendship that unite the two neighboring peoples and states, recalling Angola’s role in Namibia’s liberation struggle.

“These are two countries that complement each other even because we have a very long border. The Angolans who are in the provinces of Cunene and Cuando Cubango have a connection not only of friendship but also of family,” she expressed.

The Angolan parliamentary delegation, which also includes deputy Lázaro Kakunha, will be present, this Saturday, in the final goodbye to Geingob, who passed away on February 4th, at the age of 82, after being diagnosed with cancer.

The ceremony in his honor takes place at the Rundu Sports Stadium and is attended by thousands of Namibian and Angolan citizens, who through praises, poems and messages expressed how much affection they had for this Namibian statesman.

Before being elected President of Namibia for the first time in 2015, Hage Geingob faced a long exile in Botswana and the United States of America, as an anti-apartheid activist.

Prime Minister of Namibia twice (1990-2002 and 2012-2015), Hage Geingob came to power in March 2015, having been re-elected in 2019.

Hage Geingob was the third President of Namibia, a country that became independent on March 21, 1990, when it was no longer politically and administratively controlled by South Africa, where the Apartheid regime was in force.

Following Hage Geingob’s physical death, the country’s vice-president, Nangolo Mbumba, was quickly sworn in as interim president, to complete his second and final term.
