Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of State for Economic Coordination, José de Lima Massano, highlighted on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that the Angolan Government is implementing new systems for the collection, treatment, distribution and expansion of water supply throughout the national territory, in the 2023/2027 period.

The minister, who is participating in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting, stressed that access to drinking water and sanitation is of vital importance for meeting the requirements of food security, poverty eradication and sustainable development, according to a note.

Quoted in the note, José de Lima Massano added that the Government is deeply committed to developing its best efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, with increasingly significant investments.

The Minister of State reiterated Angola’s commitment to promoting the right to drinking water and sanitation under equal conditions, without discrimination and in sufficient quantity and quality as an inalienable human right.

At the event, the Angolan delegation, led by José de Lima Massano, includes senior officials of the Angolan Executive, as well as the Angolan ambassador to Brazil, Manuel Eduardo Bravo.

For his part, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stressed that drinking water and basic sanitation are crucial for economic and social progress and the guarantee of human rights, including health and a sustainable environment.

He said Brazil has large reserves of drinking water, but also faces challenges with its semi-arid region and vulnerable communities, including indigenous people, requiring preservation and better water distribution.

The G20 Development Ministerial Meeting began with a strong call to ensure universal access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

The meeting will be attended by ministers and delegates from 21 countries, plus representatives from nine invited countries and 19 international organizations.

On Monday, the meeting addressed the theme ‘Ensuring Access to Water and Sanitation’, while Tuesday the theme on ‘Combating Inequalities and Trilateral Cooperation’ is planned, and the event should end on July 24, with the launch of the Initiative on the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
