Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço authorized expenditure in the amount of US$17,869,190.46, through external financing, for the design and construction of the Bero, Curoca 2, Giraúl, Carujamba and Inamangando Dams, integrated into the Program to Combat the Effects of Drought in the South of the country.

The authorization, by means of Presidential Order No. 224/24, of October 2, formalizes the opening of the simplified contracting procedure, based on material criteria, as well as the contracting of technical coordination services for design and construction contracts. It also provides for the recovery and dredging of 43 stone masonry dams and water retention reservoirs in the municipalities of Bibala, Camucuio, Moçâmedes and Virei, in the province of Nambie.

The President of the Republic gave the green light to the construction and recovery of these hydrographic infrastructures, taking into account the episodes of drought recorded in Namibe, which have had a severe impact on the economic and social activity of the population in the aforementioned province.

In response to such events, the Programme to Combat the Effects of Drought in Southern Angola (PCESSA) was launched, which consists of building water storage and distribution infrastructures in the affected regions.

The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, is delegated authority, with the power to sub-delegate, for the approval of the parts of the procedure, the verification of the validity and legality of all acts carried out within the scope of said procedure, including the conclusion and signature of the contract.

In the Order, the President of the Republic gives the green light to the project’s registration in the Public Investment Program (PIP) 2024.

Last August, the Head of the Executive Branch confirmed the level of execution of the different works that make up the N’due Dam, in the municipality of Cuvelai, province of Cunene.

At the time, the director of the National Institute of Water Resources and coordinator of PCESSA, Narciso Ambrósio, recalled that the Program to Combat the Effects of Drought in Southern Angola was not limited to the province of Cunene, and, in parallel, work continued in the provinces of Huíla and Namibe.

As part of the aforementioned program, Narciso Ambrósio said that the construction of two dams in Huíla was planned, which will improve the water supply in the city of Lubango and, consequently, in neighboring municipalities.

A set of projects have been identified for the province of Namibe, starting with the Bentiaba and Beru dams. Also in this province, 43 existing masonry dams have been identified for renovation.
