Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) recommended on Friday (21), to the Angola Executive, an intensification of preventive measures and the promotion of awareness campaigns to reverse the current mortality rate in some regions of the country, since January.

The recommendation came from the debate on “The cholera Outbreak”, proposed by the UNITA Parliamentary Group, during the 3rd Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the 3rd Legislative Session of the 5th Legislature.

The opposition party PRS’s deputy, Benedito Daniel, said that cholera has changed its “appearance”, arguing that it is essential to investigate its causes, since it is affecting all social groups.

He appealed to the health authorities to do a good job among the communities, in order to have real control of the epidemiological situation.

UNITA deputy, Maurilio Luiete, considered the cholera outbreak a serious public health issue, expressing concern about the obvious lack in controlling the situation, 15 weeks after the disease broke out.

He stated that measures must be proactive, in order to reverse the current situation that is causing many deaths.

In turn, MPLA deputy Paulo de Carvalho considered that this is a hard period, with the cholera outbreak, a return of the disease 7 years after the last cases reported, which were not as alarming as the current.

According to Paulo de Carvalho, “there is a greater probability of the disease spreading”, mentioning that another socio-demographic factor is linked to the large concentration of people in neighbourhoods such as Paraíso and Belo Monte, in the municipality of Cacuaco, for example.

“We need to think about what to do to stop this evil, whose effects are devastating for the families affected. The contingency plan already approved by the Executive must be immediately and fully implemented, with the necessary resources being allocated to it,” he argued.

According to the MP, health authorities should not stop awaring in prevention, stating that whenever this occurs, they will be investing in reducing morbidity and mortality rates.

In the plenary session on Friday (21), parliamentarians approved several pieces of legislation, with emphasis on the Draft Resolutions approving the Extradition Agreement between the Republics of Angola and Zimbabwe and the one for the Ratification of the 2022 International Coffee Agreement, between Angola and the International Coffee Organization (ICO).
