Angola and Namibia Identify Key Areas for Cooperation

Africa-Press – Angola. The meeting between the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, and his Namibian counterpart, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, on Friday, at the Palácio da Cidade Alta, allowed the identification of the “key areas” that should receive the attention of both countries, within the scope of strengthening the cooperation relationship. The information was provided to journalists by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, at the end of the meeting between the two Heads of State.

The head of Angolan diplomacy stressed that the areas of cooperation should be materialized in such a way as to provide a content that adapts to the imperatives of the moment, which correspond to the areas of Energy, Agriculture and Infrastructure, as well as the relationship between the peoples.

The Oil sector, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, also deserves special attention from both countries, but above all it has been of greater interest to Namibia, as the country is preparing to join the club of oil-producing nations.“Angolan experience is of great interest to Namibia and President Netumbo’s visit to Sonils is therefore justified, to see ‘in-situ’ the capabilities that the Republic of Angola has developed in this area. The sectors are already in talks on this matter and Namibia has already started training its staff in the Republic of Angola”, he assured.

The nature of the cooperation relationship between Angola and Namibia, added the head of Angolan diplomacy, allows for the sharing of knowledge in a very transparent manner that can benefit both countries. “In short, united in the struggle for liberation, we are also united in the struggle for development”, emphasised Téte António.

During the meeting between the two Presidents, Téte António stressed, the conversation focused essentially on strengthening cooperation and relations between the two countries, having stressed that, with Namibia, the country has seen progress in terms of the cooperation mechanism. “We went from the National Commission to the Binational Commission”, he maintained.According to the head of Angolan diplomacy, the meeting between João Lourenço and Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah also allowed the 60 agreements that support the current cooperation relationship to be discussed and another 10 that are on the negotiation table to be assessed.

“The guidance given to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Relations of the Republic of Angola and Namibia is to work towards holding the First Session of the Binational Commission and signing, on this occasion, the other legal instruments under negotiation”, explained Téte António.

The holding of a Binational Commission, explained the minister, includes a meeting between the countries at the level of the Heads of State, highlighting the importance of the event given the fact that Angola does not share this type of commission with all countries.

“We only have this commission with a few countries that we consider to be very strategic for Angola, including the Republic of Namibia”, he stressed.

The fact that the President of Namibia chose Angola as the first country to visit after taking office, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, is justified by well-known reasons, having assured that both nations are linked by history.

“Namibia for Angola and Angola for Namibia is more than a strategic partner. It is a country with which we have a special relationship and President Netumbo’s working visit to Luanda, although brief, is very rich in content, because we reviewed the cooperation between the two countries”, he highlighted.a
