Africa-Press – Angola. As an observer member state of the CPLP, Canada has made a major contribution to promoting education and teaching the Portuguese language. In a statement, the Angolan Embassy in Canada highlighted the importance of the Portuguese language in the context of the CPLP and its influence on preserving the identity and cultural diversification of the different peoples that make up the organization.

Representatives from Angola, Brazil and Portugal, accredited in Canada, met in Ottawa to celebrate the anniversary of World Portuguese Language Day on May 5, as members of the CPLP, which currently has more than 265 million Portuguese speakers worldwide.

The event was marked by cultural exhibitions and tributes to the great poets of Portuguese-speaking literature, such as Luís de Camões, Fernando Pessoa and Agostinho Neto.The event also included a musical concert by Trio Victor Anastácio, Brazilian musicians living in Canada, and by singer and poet Tammy Weis, of Canadian origin but based in Portugal.The event, which took place at the Fourth Stage-Nacional Arts Centre, was attended by the Consul General of Angola in Toronto, Barros José, the Brazilian ambassador, Carlos França, and the Portuguese ambassador António Rocha, both accredited in Canada.
