Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, regretted, this Monday, the act of violence perpetrated in the municipality of Galanga, province of Huambo, during the visit of deputy Apolo Yakuvela from the UNITA Parliamentary Group on May 31, which resulted in injuries to the parliamentarian and the delegation that accompanied him.
In a note of repudiation sent to the press, the National Assembly requests the competent bodies to take the necessary measures to clarify and hold the perpetrators accountable.
“We stand in solidarity with MP Apolo Yakuvela and hope that he will soon resume his role as a legitimately elected representative of the people,” the document reads.
On Saturday, the Executive Secretariat of the Permanent Committee of the UNITA Political Commission denounced “heinous acts of political intolerance” attributing the action to “individuals identified as members of the MPLA” against the delegation led by the party’s provincial secretary and deputy to the National Assembly Apollo Yakuvela.
The delegation had traveled to the municipality of Galanga, Huambo province “within the scope of the new political-administrative division of Angola” to implement party structures, a “legitimate and constitutional right” provided for in article 17 of the Constitution.
UNITA said in a statement that the delegation was “ambushed” by members of the ruling party, who “used violence to try to prevent the free and peaceful exercise of political activity”.
The party considers that these acts constitute a “serious attack on the life and dignity of the human person” and a “huge setback in the construction of a democratic and lawful State”.
