Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State, João Lourenço, on Wednesday in Luanda received in audience the specialist in robotic surgery, the North American doctor Vipul Papel, one of the world’s greatest experts in this segment.
The renowned specialist is once again in Angola, conducting a training program for Angolan doctors in this field of medicine.
Vipul Patel has been performing robotic surgeries on patients with urological diseases at the Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex, in Luanda.
The physician, who is known for being the pioneer in this field worldwide, has stood out in recent times for his Telesurgery programs, where surgeons can operate remotely, challenging the limits and frontiers of medical technology.
The first robotic surgery in Angola was successfully performed on August 6, 2024, at the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex, in Luanda, as part of the treatment of prostate cancer.
This historic milestone marks the arrival of this type of treatment in the country, which has become the second in sub-Saharan Africa to perform it.
The surgery performed by Dr. Vipul Patel, in collaboration with Angolan physicians, was successfully performed in a 60-year-old patient with prostate cancer.
The treatment was an important step in improving the quality of healthcare in Angola and in the fight against prostate cancer, which is a public health problem.
Robotic surgery is considered a minimally invasive technique that offers several benefits to patients, including less pain, faster recovery and better precision.
It can also improve treatment outcomes, such as preserving urinary continence and sexual function in patients with prostate cancer.
With the implementation of robotic surgery, Angola demonstrates its commitment to innovation, as well as the improvement of the quality of healthcare.
For the future of robotic surgery in Angola, the government intends to extend this type of operation to other medical specialties, such as gynaecology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery and orthopaedics.
Angolan doctors will also have the opportunity to participate in training on robotic surgery in the United States of America (USA), in partnership with the AdventHealth Global Robotics Institute (GRI).
Robotic surgery promises to bring significant benefits to the Angolan population, with the possibility of improving the treatment of various diseases and improving the quality of life of patients.
