Africa-Press – Angola. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD) has granted approval for the Union of African Karate-Do Federations (UFAK) to organize the 2026 edition of the African Championship, in Angola.
The continental sports organization proposed, in a previous period, that Angola would host only the Zonal Championship, but after a recent analysis of the infrastructures it was concluded that there were conditions to host the two events.
The information was transmitted to the press during the International Tournament alluding to the 50th anniversary of independence, which ended on Sunday (28), at the Cidadela pavilion in Luanda.
The decision was announced after a meeting between the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, the vice-president of the International Confederation, Bechir Cherif, and the president of the Union of African Federations, Souleimane Gaye.
On the occasion, Minister Rui Falcão said that due to the commitment made to organize both events in 2026, Angola and the African Union should start organizational work as soon as possible.
The official recalled that the country has quality infrastructures, capable of hosting the two competitions with excellence, now even more so due to the improvement works in the properties, on the occasion of the African Senior Men”s Basketball Championship, in August.
Rui Falcão said that the ministry supports all initiatives to organize international competitions in the country, with the purpose of expanding sport throughout Angola.
In turn, the president of the Union of African Federations, Souleimane Gaye, said that by accepting to host the two competitions, the Angolan state demonstrates commitment to the development of Karate-Do and to sport in general.
“Let”s wait for Angola”s comfort letter, so that we can work on the organizational aspects of both events”, he stressed.
The president of the Angolan Federation, Giliano André, said that the two African events will constitute gains from the perspective of the participation of athletes in international competitions.
For him, the independence tournament opened doors for Angola to return to international competitions, which is a great asset for the development of the sport internally.
