Africa-Press – Angola. Angola calls for the mobilisation of more international partners to ensure compliance with the operations of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with a view to eradicating terrorism and violent extremism in the region, the Angolan ambassador to the country said on Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Miguel Bembe.
A press release, states that the Angolan representative to the African Union (AU) made this statement during the 1287th Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council on the Situation in Somalia and AUSSOM operations, on behalf of Foreign Minister Téte António.
According to the document, speaking at the meeting, held in virtual format, Miguel Bembe advocated that this joint effort is essential to end one of the most important threats to world peace and security.
Despite the performance demonstrated by the Somali authorities and the AU in this area, the Angolan diplomat said that the indicators show that AUSSOM faces challenges that constitute major obstacles to the full fulfillment of its mandate.
The diplomat said that Angola considers AUSSOM as an important turning point to protect civilians, promote political and security stability and prepare the transfer of security operations to the Somali army within four and a half years.
“In this context, Angola strongly deplores the financial deficit that prevents the mission from being endowed with adequate, sustainable and predictable resources,” the Angolan Ambassador said in his communication.
He stressed that Angola also considers it essential to accelerate the process of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719 and the exploration of other fundraising initiatives, to adequately respond to this need.
He recalled that the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, as acting president of the AU, has placed peace and security issues as one of the priorities.
The Angolan diplomat encouraged the AU Commission to urgently address the various constraints that are delaying the transfer of troops, both in one direction and the other, in order to avoid creating a security vacuum during the process.
