Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Synodal Evangelical Church of Angola (IESA), Dinis Eurico, called Friday, in Lubango, for fair management of the country’s resources and more dialogue between the people and the government to prevent the recurrence of violent acts.
Speaking at a press conference about the impact of the church’s social projects on communities and the church’s position regarding Angola’s socioeconomic situation, the reverend said that both parties must dialogue, as children of the same nation.
He declared that it makes no sense to destroy again what was built with sacrifice just because hunger and poverty are pressing, as the problem is knowing what is the right thing to do in the face of Angola’s real misery. He emphasized that vandalizing public transport that aids mobility, destroying businesses owned by peaceful citizens that support families, looting warehouses that even provide jobs for some young people, and injuring and even killing people reopens wounds.
In this regard, Dinis Eurico stated that IESA stands in solidarity with the most vulnerable and condemns the recent incidents of vandalism and rioting that have occurred in some Angolan cities, the epicenter of which was Luanda, including Lubango, which has also seen reports of attempted riots.
He explained that the church’s stance stems from the consequences of the situation, such as the loss of lives, job losses, a decrease in the number of buses, the loss of personal and business vehicles, situations that have caused losses to the Angolan economy, and increased spending on detainees, among others.
Dinis Eurico also called on the Angolan Church to hold a national fast for at least one day, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., for prayer and reflection on the country’s 50th anniversary of independence.
In Luanda alone, where the epicenter of the vandalism and riots occurred on July 28th, official figures indicate 22 deaths, 197 injuries, and over 1,200 arrests during the unrest that followed the shutdown of taxi services. In Huíla, attempts at disorder occurred on July 29, in Lubango, where a 16-year-old teenager was accidentally killed by a National Police officer.
