Council of the Republic Urges Ongoing Security Measures

Africa-Press – Angola. The Council of the Republic on Monday in Luanda encouraged defense and security bodies to continue with measures to guarantee public order, tranquility and security and the maintenance of social peace.

The encouragement is expressed in the final communiqué of the extraordinary session of the consultation body of the President of the Republic, which analyzed the situation of public security in the country, read by the Council acting spokesperson, Paula Simone.

During the meeting, chaired by the Head of State, João Lourenço, the members of the Council of the Republic were informed that the public security situation in the country is stable, and that the services, once temporarily interrupted because of acts of vandalism, are now in full operation, despite the persistence of disinformation and disguised incitement to violence on social networks.

The Council called on the population to maintain a civic, orderly posture, guided by the responsible and conscious exercise of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola and in the Law, and by respect for the authorities, also avoiding the spread of disinformation on digital platforms, so that the well-being of all can be safeguarded.

The advisory body of the President of the Republic analysed the public security situation in the country, with emphasis on the events that took place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of July and 1st of August, namely in the provinces of Luanda, Malanje, Huíla, Benguela, Bengo and Icolo and Bengo, marked by acts of vandalism, rioting and insurgency against the forces of order and security, as well as looting of public and private establishments.

The extraordinary meeting took place a week after the meeting of the National Security Council, which took place on the 5th of this month, with the same purpose.

The Council of the Republic includes the Vice-President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly and the President of the Constitutional Court (TC).

Likewise, the Council includes the Attorney General of the Republic, the presidents of political parties and coalitions of political parties represented in the National Assembly, as well as 10 invited entities.
