Afrobasket2025: Expert Reticent on Angola'S Triumph

Africa-Press – Angola. The National Basketball Team will have a tough time winning the African Championship (Afrobasket2025), which takes place from the 12th to the 24th of this month in Namibe and Luanda, due to the significant improvement of its opponents, stated former athlete and sports medicine specialist, Paulo Murias.

Previewing the tournament, in which Angola will debut against Libya in the country’s capital, the former national team doctor told that continental competitions are currently more difficult, due to the majority of foreign players playing in European and American leagues.

Regarding the country, Paulo Murias also specified that there is no longer much advance preparation, nor long training camps as in the past, during which the Angolan team gained competitive experience to overcome its opponents. “In the past, Angola had all its players from domestic competitions; everyone came together for intensive and prolonged training, which created a strong and determined team.

Therefore, it was a huge advantage, determining the results,” he said. Regarding their opponents, he acknowledged the significant progress of the South Sudanese team, which has strong performance, allowing it to present itself as the main candidate to win the current African Championship, without overlooking other challenges that could also complicate matters for the country.

Paulo Murias, also the first director of the Angolan Sports Medicine Center, is in the city of Moçamedes to deal with personal matters. He will also take the opportunity to watch the matches of the National Team, which is in Group C, against similar teams from Libya, South Sudan, and Guinea.
