Africa-Press – Angola. The lawyer for the vice-president of the National Association of Taxi Drivers of Angola (ANATA) warned about the health condition of Rodrigo Luciano Catimba, who has been detained for over a week, considering that he needs medical assistance.
According to Jovete Domingos, his client, detained since July 31, has a high fever and needs medical assistance, urging the judicial authorities, especially the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), to safeguard his right to life.
“We are very concerned about his health. (…) Mr. Catimba is ill, he has a high fever, weakness, everything indicates it is malaria, and he also has hemorrhoids,” he told Lusa.
Jovete Domingos also regretted the lack of response from the Public Prosecutor’s Office magistrates assigned to the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) Luanda regarding the health status of the ANATA official.
Rodrigo Luciano Catimba was arrested in Benguela, three days after the start of protests and riots in several Angolan provinces, following the strike decreed by taxi drivers called by ANATA, and then transferred to Luanda, where he is being held.
The Angolan Criminal Investigation Service announced at the time that Catimba was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence, defending crime, rebellion and terrorism.
Regarding the reasons for his arrest, Jovete Domingos lamented that the ANATA official was being held “unjustly” without any trial and without any coercive measures being applied.
“Therefore, we are waiting expectantly for the decision on our petition, in which we ask that the justice institutions decide to return our freedom,” concluded the lawyer.
The president of ANATA has also been detained since Friday due to “strong evidence” of promoting acts of vandalism and disorder against public and private property and services, the SIC announced.
