President of the Republic honors runners-up

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic paid tribute, on Monday, in Luanda, to a group of athletes from the national team of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which became runner-up in the African championship, held in South Africa.

The Angolan MMA team participated in the African competition with 15 of the 30 expected athletes, having collected 13 medals. To the President of the Republic, the Angolan Federation of the sport offered the gold medal won in the tournament, while the bronze was given to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ana Paula do Sacramento. Speaking to the press at the end of the nearly two-hour meeting in Cidade Alta, the president of the Angolan Federation of Mixed Martial Arts, Armando Diogo, said that the victory was “quite sweaty”, stressing that the Angolan athletes qualified with the best performance for the world championship, scheduled for next November, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

“In terms of knowledge and talent, we had the best athletes competing in the African sport”, indicated Armando Diogo, who said he had received guarantees from the Head of State to support the federation for the world competition.

He underlined that in terms of infrastructure Angola owes nothing to South Africa, a fact that led the president of the International MMA Federation to choose the country to host the next African championship, between April or May next year.

To verify the infrastructural conditions, as well as others for the realization of the continental event, the international responsible for MMA will visit Angola next August.

Armando Diogo announced, by the way, that the athletes are already preparing hard for the world competition in Abu Dhabi. He mentioned that a technical team works in all provinces to select the best for the competition, in which the federation intends to take thirty or more fighters.
