Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan ambassador to the United Kingdom, José Patrício, on Thursday presented the letters of credentials to the secretary general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsénio Velasco, in London, which enable him to represent the Angolan State before this institution.

The IMO is the United Nations agency responsible for regulating international maritime transport, whose Annual General Assembly will begin next Monday, also in the British capital.

During the ceremony held at the institution’s headquarters in London, Arsénio Velasco assured the Angolan representative that the IMO is available to support Angola in the management of its maritime resources, considered strategic for the country’s economic development.

The secretary general also ensured the continuity of the scholarship program aimed at training Angolan staff in areas linked to marine sciences.

For his part, Ambassador José Patrício highlighted that Angola seeks to strengthen its relationship with the sea, seeing it as a source of wealth and strategic opportunities.

Founded in 1948 and operational since 1959, the IMO currently includes more than 170 States, including Angola, and its mission is to guarantee safety, protection and environmental sustainability in global maritime transport.

The Angolan diplomat is also expected to present, on Friday (21), his letters of credentials to the International Coffee Organization, also based in London.
