Africa-Press – Angola. The death of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos “Nandó”, surprised Angolans and caused consternation in various sectors of society, said Francisco Fernandes Falua, spokesperson of the opposition UNITA.
Speaking to the press, Francisco Falua stressed that “Nandó” was a central figure in Angolan politics in recent decades, with a trajectory that is intertwined with much of the country’s recent history.
“Throughout his career, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos held almost all the highest state offices, with the exception of the Presidency of the Republic. Notable positions include Prime Minister, Speaker of the National Assembly and Commander-General of the National Police,” he said.
The UNITA leader addressed a message of condolence to the bereaved family, stressing that the death of “Nandó” represents a loss that is difficult to overcome.
Falua also highlighted the former politician’s role as a “bridge builder,” recalling his contribution to dialogue mechanisms and the peacebuilding process in Angola, in which he played a key role.
The politician praised the late man’s conciliatory style while conducting parliamentary work as Speaker of the National Assembly.
“Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos frequently resorted to satire and dialogue to promote harmony and respect in political debate,” Falua said.
According to the spokesperson, “Nandó” leaves a remarkable political legacy and a memory that will remain in the country’s institutional history.
“With his death, Angola loses one of its most illustrious sons. This is a loss felt throughout the country, regardless of the political convictions, social status, or religious beliefs of citizens,” he concluded.
