Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, sent a congratulatory message this Friday to his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel-Bermúdez, on the occasion of January 1st, the date that marks the 67th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro.

“I have the honor of congratulating the people of Cuba, the Government and Your Excellency, on behalf of the Angolan Executive and myself, on the celebration of another anniversary of the Cuban Revolution,” writes the Head of State.

In his message, President João Lourenço considers January 1st a “memorable date,” and therefore sends Miguel Canel-Bermúdez wishes for personal well-being and good health, and others for prosperity to the Cuban people.

He praises the resilience of the Cuban people, who, despite the sacrifices they have made, have demonstrated “a great sense of dignity” in the face of the vicissitudes they face in their daily lives, to uphold Cuba’s sovereignty and its right to freedom of choice of its destiny.João Lourenço reaffirms that Angola maintains its interest in deepening the existing ties of cooperation and friendship between the two peoples, “aware that we will achieve results that will project the progress of Angola and Cuba.”

The Cuban Revolution was an armed and guerrilla movement that culminated in the overthrow of the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959, by the 26th of July Movement, led by Fidel Castro.

The triumph of the Revolution radically changed the history of the island, located 140 kilometers from the United States, initiating profound transformations in internal politics, aiming to build a socialist state.

The new authorities radically altered Cuba’s relations with the United States, until then a privileged ally of the government led by Fulgencio Batista.

Before the Revolution, the island was economically dependent on the United States, with American companies controlling key sectors such as transportation, communications, finance, and tourism.
