Africa-Press – Angola. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Central Africa (UNOCA), Abdou Abarry, praised on Friday in Luanda, the Angolan diplomacy in resolving regional and continental conflicts.

Speaking to the press, following a meeting with the Angolan president and chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço, the UN official said the Angolan Head of State has played a key role in various peace processes in Africa, especially in the crises in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR).

“The Angolan Head of State has played a clear and consistent role in seeking peaceful solutions to conflicts, motivating the United Nations to monitor and support Angola,” he said.

The Nigerien diplomat discussed with President João Lourenço ways to strengthen cooperation between Angola and the UN to promote peace, stability, and security in the Central African region. He considers Angola a true “solution country” on the African continent.

Abdou Abarry said the visit marks the end of his mandate after three and a half years leading UNOCA and that he chose Angola as the first country to offer his farewell greetings.

“I chose Angola to say goodbye to the President of the Republic and, through him, to the Angolan people, who have always supported my mandate and the peace efforts in Central Africa,” he said.

During the meeting, the United Nations representative encouraged the Angolan Head of State to continue playing an active role in conflict mediation, especially in his capacity as the chairperson of the African Union, having appealed for the maintenance of dialogue and the quest for peaceful solutions.

The meeting also served to reiterate the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Angola’s efforts for peace, security, and regional stability. It emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between the UN and UNOCA on conflict prevention and resolution initiatives in Central Africa and adjacent regions.
