The 1o de Agosto senior women’s team won the Provincial Handball Championship after their second consecutive victory, 29-18, against Sporting de Luanda, in the final of the best-of-three play-off. The team coached by José Terça Chuma won the last set, 2-0, with relative ease, although the games, especially the first, had the dignity of a true battle.
Yesterday, the champions set the course of the match from the beginning, aware that it was a day of consecration and, what’s more, against an opponent who was quick to take advantage of mistakes.
The champions were tested to exhaustion on the first day. They only achieved victory in extra time. The scoreboard in regular time showed a 16-16 draw.
In the first half of extra time, the score remained tied, now at 18 goals. The 24-23 advantage only came at the last minute.
The victory returned the trophy to the military team’s gallery, where it had not been since the 2023 edition. Last year the team withdrew from the competition and watched from the stands as the women of Petro de Luanda won their second championship.In the third place match, Petro de Luanda defeated Benga FC in a single match. Having recovered from the surprise of the semi-final, which was approached with a sense of superiority, Luís Chaves’ team showed that they had learned their lesson well and won 35-20, with the score already 15-14 at half-time. Petro de Luanda’s next match is the final four of the African Super Cup, on the 12th and 13th, in Cairo, Egypt. From the 14th to the 26th, they will play 1.o de Agosto, at the same venue, representing the country in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
