50 Years of Independence Means a Lot to Angolans - Georges Chicoty

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s 50 years of independence means a lot to Angolans, said Georges Rebelo Chicoty, secretary-general of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) on Friday in Luanda.

The diplomat made the statement shortly after being awarded the Peace and Development medal by Angolan Head of State João Lourenço at a the celebration ceremony of 50 years of National Independence to be celebrated on November 11.

Georges Chicoty, who considered the ceremony “very important,” said that on a personal level, the gesture recognizes the work he has done over the years in the field of diplomacy.

He acknowledged that Angolan diplomacy, under the guidance of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, continues to be of high importance.

For the bishop of the United Methodist Church of Angola, Gaspar João Domingos, also awarded the 50th anniversary of Independence medal, the award is the result of the work that the religious institution has carried out over the years, in partnership with the government and society.

“We will continue to preserve and value the achievements of our country and look to men and women, members of churches and beyond, with emphasis on all those who have contributed to maintaining peace and ensuring development in Angola,” he said.

Also awarded the medal, politician Lindo Bernardo Tito expressed his gratitude for being publicly recognized for his contribution over the 50 years of independence and the consolidation of peace.

“Therefore, I am very satisfied, and this encourages me even more to look at this country as the only one to which I must continue to contribute,” he said.

As part of the 50th anniversary of independence, several personalities who have contributed to the country’s development, peace, and stability are being honored in the Independence and Peace and Development Classes.

The Head of State personally presented the medal and associated diploma to the families and representatives of dozens of other honorees who have already passed away.
