Africa-Press – Angola. In an exclusive interview, the president of the Democratic Bloc, one of the members of the FPU, proposes a “regime pact” to remove the MPLA from power, with the formalization of the Angolan opposition coalition.
In Angola, the Democratic Bloc (BD) will hold its national convention in August, bringing together delegates from the country’s 21 provinces. The meeting could mark a turning point in the party’s leadership, although Filomeno Vieira Lopes has not yet confirmed whether he will run again.
“That has not yet been decided. We have not yet announced our candidacy, we will announce it. And if that is the case, the party members (will be informed) directly,” he said.
What is certain is that, at this convention, multiple candidacies are expected – including for the position of secretary-general.
Regarding the United Patriotic Front (FPU) – a topic that continues to generate debate in society – Filomeno Vieira Lopes began by explaining why Abel Chivukuvuku, president of PRA-JA Servir Angola, was left out of the last meeting held in Luanda.
“There was a certain unwillingness on Abel’s part to talk together”, he explained, referring to recent statements by Abel Chivukuvuku, who said he had received a mandate from PRA-JA delegates to “walk alone”.
Filomeno Vieira Lopes understands that there is an “invisible hand” that is forcing FPU members to run alone and adds that only unity can bring about eventual political change in 2027.
“It is not only the political parties that want change – that want change, I stress this very clearly – and change has a very clear meaning: it is to remove the MPLA from power. The MPLA must move to the opposition and we must create the instruments for true democratic institutions in the country, a country that is inclusive and with active citizenship”, he argued.
A “regime pact”
And how would the MPLA be removed from power? The president of the Democratic Bloc proposes a “regime pact” with the formalization of a coalition of opposition political parties, with the support of churches and civil society.
“The Democratic Bloc believes that this regime pact is important to be made. To do so, the conditions need to be created. We are not in a position to do this, because we have a party that thinks it owns everything. We have a party that has the mentality that it is the one that won independence, proclaimed independence and that we must all submit to what it formulates and designs,” he said, in a direct criticism of the MPLA.
Regarding the local elections, Filomeno Vieira Lopes does not understand why they have not yet been held and explains what they would mean for the country and the practical life of citizens.
“This would mean the expansion of democracy in our country, it would mean the liberation of the citizen. Above all, it would mean an internal dynamic in the country that would allow for greater development,” he concluded.
